What is Full disk encryption (FDE)?

Full disk encryption (FDE) or whole disk encryption is a means of encrypting all of the data on a disk, including temporary files, programs, and system files. Following FDE initialization, all information is automatically encrypted when written to the disk and decrypted when read, if the user has authorization. Even if an users removes the disk and installs it in other devices, they will not be able to access the data without the password or encryption keys.

How to decrypt FDE encrypted files?

Binding the encryption key to the device’s hardware makes decryption more difficult than normal data decryption. The FDE decryption process can slow down data access times, especially when virtual memory is accessed a lot. In some operating systems, after 10 failed decryption attempts, all information stored on the device will be completely erased.
